Honoring the Vision. Crafting the Future.

In September of 2004, at the age of 38, Jimi Brooks unexpectedly passed away as Harvest was about to begin. A group of Jimi’s friends selflessly donated their skill, time, and passion to make Jimi’s 2004 wines in his signature style. For our 20th anniversary, we are celebrating those winemakers with a number of special events and monthly programming. Welcome to The Legacy Series.

Featured Winemaker

Laurent Montalieu, Soléna Estate

We are honored to feature two Soléna wines made by Laurent: 2016 Willamette Valley Pinot Gris and 2015 Domaine Danielle Laurent Pinot Noir. Both wines are featured on our Tasting Flights this month, are available for purchase in our Tasting Room, or can be purchased directly from Soléna Estate.

For January, Chef Abby has matched the 2016 Soléna Pinot Gris with a Porcini and Leek Goat Cheese-Gruyere Tart.

This pairing is featured daily in our tasting room. A 3 oz. pour of the wine and the tart is $20.

Laurent will be joining us on January 27th 1-4pm, to pour his featured wines and reminisce about Jimi. It’s a great opportunity to get to know this legend in the industry and share some wine and memories.

Please enjoy these image of Jimi, Laurent, and a variety of others. If you have any pictures to share, please send them to janie@brookswine.com.

About Laurent Montalieu

Laurent took his first steps in the vineyard in Medoc owned by his great grandfather, Joseph Montalieu. He grew up on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and returned to his family's homeland of Bordeaux for summer vacations and high school. It was through his family's deep commitment to the land that he learned to respect the vines and the wines they produced.

His interest in viticulture led him to the Institute of Oenology of Bordeaux, where he immersed himself in studies of vineyard management and winemaking.

After graduating in 1987 he worked for Chateau La Tour Blanche near Sauternes, and Domaine Mumm in California's Napa Valley before moving to Oregon. After seven successful vintages at Bridgeview Vineyards in Cave Junction, Laurent joined WillaKenzie Estate in 1995 as partner and winemaker.

Laurent gained the respect of industry leaders and professionals with his passion for the highest quality standards in the vineyard coupled with a philosophy of minimal intervention in the production of handcrafted wines.

In 2003 he left WillaKenzie to focus on Soléna Estate with his wife Danielle. Today, Laurent handcrafts the Soléna Estate and Hyland Estate wines while also serving as winemaker and co-founder of the
Northwest Wine Company, a state-of- the-art winemaking facility in nearby Dundee. There he produces Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris from the Domaine Danielle Laurent vineyard as well as other prime sites throughout the Willamette Valley. Expanding on his passion for winemaking, he also produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Zinfandel under the Soléna Estate label.
