Jimi’s Bio
Jimi Brooks March 7, 1966 - September 4, 2004
It all started on a hot, still September afternoon, the air vibrating with insects, my body drenched in sweat, my hands sticky with grape juice and my throat demanding the cold cleanliness of a beer. There was my Godfather, friends, a couple of dogs, a basket press, and the Tualatin River Valley in the near distance. There were also some bottles of Grand Cru White Burgundies on a nearby table that I persistently returned to, fascinated by the differences in each bottle and the detailed explanations of each producer from a friend. We were making Chardonnay as well. This was the first day I ever took part in making wine. It wasn't so much that it was romantic but it was real. It was visceral. I liked it. I, however, never did learn to like the wine we made that day but fell in love with the experience of that afternoon that changed the direction of my life forever.
From there it was finishing up at Linfield College where I studied literature, film and communications. Then with a small backpack filled with clothes, books and the weighty promise of future I headed overseas. I landed in Beaujolais where I worked for the Deschamps Family making wine, tending vineyards and learning to play boule for 4 years. An enormous amount of my time was spent in the vineyard building calluses and a greater understanding of the vine. Most importantly I learned that the quality of any wine comes from the care taken in the vineyard.
From France it was back to America to work for the French. I spent the next 5 years at Willakenzie Estate under Laurent Montalieu. It was there that I was given the opportunity to start my own label, which I did in 1998. It began with Riesling and Pinot Noir and has continued with these noble grapes ever since.
My winemaking philosophy is simple: Farming and balance. In both the vineyard and my wines I seek balance. I am a practicing supporter of organic and biodynamic farming. From 2002 on only organically farmed grapes are bottled under the Brooks label. I believe that farming in this way, by keeping the earth alive and the ecosystem intact, is the only way to really achieve that concept of "terrior." While I respect the individuality of each piece of land and the sense of place, I believe one can achieve the greatest depth, flavors and balance in a wine only by blending.
