2021 Rastaban Pinot Noir

A dazzling, full-bodied Pinot Noir with robust notes of wild strawberries, cherry cola, and red currants, with a concentrated Luxardo cherry and pomegranate syrup finish.

Comprised of 3 clones of pinot noir grapes from our very own Brooks Estate vineyard located in the Eola-Amity Hills. These clones are Pommard, 115, and 777. The vines were planted between 1973 and 1979 in volcanic basalt-nekia soil. Brooks Estate Vineyard is farmed biodynamic.

Rastaban is the name of a star and that star is the eye of a constellation called Draco. This is one of the first and more reserve pinot noir labels Jimi Brooks produced. Jimi’s passion and interests of mythology and astrology often were shown through the creation of his first wines.

93 Points | Jeb Dunnuck - The deep ruby 2021 Pinot Noir Rastaban is an estate blend, some coming from vines planted in 1973, and it sees 20%v new oak. Forward with wild red plum, crushed rosemary, and orange zest, it’s elegant on the palate, with medium body, fine tannins, a soft texture, and a clean finish with a hint of incense perfume. It will do well over the next few years.

Beautifully rich on the palate with generous layers of red and dark fruits, oolong tea, and cacao nibs, with a concentrated pomegranate finish.

Sommelier
Bursting with red fruits and tannins, the Rastaban would pair happily with a roasted duck with plum sauce topped with pomegranate seeds.

Reflecting an excellent vintage, our signature estate blend is at once concentrated and elegant. Aromatically the wine effuses sarsaparilla, cassis, and Luxardo cherry. Texturally, the wine is bright and juicy, showing off more dark cherry along with mid-palate richness and a long, succulent finish.

Winemaking Notes

Rain events at the beginning of bloom diminished yields, and a dry summer was punctuated with unprecedented heat waves. The timing worked in our favor since the heat happened pre-veraison, and the vines handled it well.

Harvest started in early September, but lower temperatures across the state allowed for a long and measured harvest season, with harvest extending into mid-October.

No disease, high sugars, balanced acids, and great flavors. 2021 will undoubtedly rank as one of the top Oregon vintages.
