Happy Father’s Day to all those dads out there! Give all of those Fathers in your life a hug today. They deserve it!

After cool temperatures and a bit of rain this week, temperatures in Amity are on the rise. It is supposed to be over 90 the next few days.

I have some fun things to share today that I hope you enjoy.

What I Learned From My Dad

Janie and her father Jim, at Janie's wedding

My dad, Jim Brooks, was a long-time Pediatrician in Portland. He was a hard worker with a big heart.

One of the greatest lessons I learned from my dad was that giving of your time, talent, and treasure, philanthropy, should always be a part of your life. In addition to his busy medical practice, my dad sat on industry boards, volunteered at the Oregon Health Sciences University, and was a huge supporter of the March of Dimes. His commitment to the March of Dimes was so substantial, he was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by receiving the Franklin D Roosevelt Award by the March of Dimes at a national level in 1997. It was a wonderful ceremony celebrating his hard work.

Sadly, we lost my dad in 2000 to Multiple Systems Atrophy or Shy Drager Syndrome. But his generosity continued as he donated his organs as well as his brain to the Mayo clinic for further learning about the disease he died from.

Today, he might think I took his lessons of volunteering to the extreme by volunteering my time for almost 17 years to run Brooks. I am sure he beams with pride that this legacy has continued bearing our family name. I know, too, he would love Brooks’ financial commitment to 1% For The Planet and Kiss The Ground as well as the time I continue to spend on various non-profit and industry boards and committees.

He was a great role model for Jimi and me. I miss him every day.

Dreaming of Sicily?

Mt Edna

We were supposed to host a group of 24 people to Sicily in October 2021. I recently reviewed the itinerary and it sound so incredible. It is all about the food, the wine and the culture of Sicily. The trip is subject to the world being safe, of course. I am crossing my fingers! I hope you can join my husband, David and me!
